IMPROVING YOUR HEALTH: HAPPY MEETS HEALTHY
Health. That little word that seems to elude us on a daily basis. Why can’t we just get it together?
For me, it’s ongoing celebrations. Not wanting to hurt anyone’s feelings because I wont try something.
When I think about the word celebration, I always think cake. It is a little precarious as I’m not a cake eater. Being gluten intolerant, you just learn to go without. Eventually it doesn’t bother you anymore.
But cake. Yes. It’s something people ALWAYS have. A go to item for any celebration.
My work is no exception. In fact, the dessert is usually the high topic of the potluck. Everyone wants to know, what kind of goodie they are getting.
A Sad but Joyous Goodbye
One of my most favorite people in the office will be off to bigger and better things soon. Accordingly, we are having a going away potluck for her.
Immediately I recognize her favorite flavor is mint. My mind goes to work thinking of something I can create for her. I want to practice my skills and make her a dessert with mint.
Just when I think I’m a genius and going to make her a mint frosting cupcake with a little Andes on top…
…the sign-up sheet makes its way around the office. Eventually it finds it’s way to my desk. There it is. In plain black and white. Just staring me down.
One of the guys has signed up for cake! CAKE!!
Have these people not met me??
Okay… I know. I don’t own the baking gig…but come on!
Opprotunity knocks. And of course, I answer!
I get up from my desk and proceed to mercilessly harass him. Eventually I relent and say I’ll bring something else. To which he replies, the cake will be store bought.
My soul is crushed.
Creating a Healthier Cake
I don’t know about all of you, but I’m a Pinterest junkie! I get so many good ideas its utter craziness.
Because I love to create things which are healthy, I decided I would do a fruit cake. I’ve never done one before, so this will be a treat.
Hopefully it goes well. With any amount of luck I will be able to recruit my co-baker Breezy to assist with the project.
If you haven’t heard of the these before, the “cake” portion is either watermelon or pineapple. Some coated with ice cream for frosting, some not.
While the opprotunity to be the “baker” is gone, my place to shine and be me is still present.
I signed up for a fruit platter. Certainly no one expects a cake.
For me, that is the joy in being a baker. Seeing people’s faces when they look at what’s been created.
A Need for Better Health
I’ve decided to dedicate this blog to better health. In doing so, I hope maybe I can change your mind about cakes. Most people love cake. That’s okay. But if you ar like me, there are too many get together equaling FAR too much cake and sweets. These darn cakes are just too cute to ignore.
My cake will certainly look like a regular cake. However, it will NOT have any sugar. At least not the refined white sugar that is so bad for us.
In a way I’m glad my co-worker signed up for cake! It forced me to think outside the box. Beyond the expectation and stay true to myself. Ultimately, furthering my quest for better health. It also provides me an opprotunity to show others we can have traditional items without chowing down the sugar!!
While I’m not 100% sure how I want the cake to look, I’m excited at the opprotunity to present something different.
One thing is for sure, they are going to be amazed when they see. When I see her face I know she will know how much we love her and how much she will be missed.
The fact that it includes good health is a bonus.
Mishaps be darned. She is worth it.
Hopefully, my other co-workers are going to love my fruit cake. I purposefully didn’t write “fruit cake.” I didn’t want to invoke the idea of the holiday treat everyone hates.
I will most certainly post pictures for you all to see!
