Dreams – Symbolism or Imagination

Death, reality, dreams, sleeping
Dreaming, whose to say what is real.

Dreams remain one of those elusive areas that we do not know that much about. While heavily researched it remains another area no one can agree upon. Because I’m interested in dreams, I’ve done research on the subject off and on over the years. What I’ve found is confusing at best.

A True Encounter

In one particularly intriguing research session I learned dreams are real. We in fact meet with those who we see in our dreams. In essence, we are literally having an encounter with whomever is in our dreams. So, the other person would be dreaming about you as well. Given my dream last night, I’m not sure how I feel about that.

A Theory of Meeting Passed Loved Ones

Butterflies, Dreams. Sleep
Dreaming of you!

Another theory is we can meet with the dead in our dreams. While we as humans think we are dreaming because our imagination is running wild. In contrast there is the theory that it is real. I don’t know if that is true. On a personal note I don’t believe I’ve ever dreamed of someone who’s passed away. Again, not sure what that would mean to the series of dreams from last night. Don’t worry, I’ll get to it. After all the person in my dream, I believe, is still alive. But let’s be honest I haven’t seen them for years and I’m not the best with keeping in touch.

A Jewish Perspective on Dreams

I did read about a year ago that Jewish people believe it’s bad to not dream. I don’t know if I’m going to say this exactly right, but our chi would be off. Essentially we would be out of balance and not allow our minds to dream. Effectively, this would be someone who shuts out feelings. Perhaps doesn’t have any. I thought, Huston we have an answer (for me). Doesn’t really relate except that normally I don’t dream.

Psychologists Have Theories Too

Of course psychologist say that dreaming can be interpreted in many ways. One such idea is that the dreamer can only see faces they’ve seen before. Makes sense, otherwise we would just be making things up in our minds. I was once told that I shouldn’t focus on the face I see. The dream likely isn’t about that specific person. Quite simply, it’s just a face we’ve seen before. As I said, there are many theories.

Perhaps we all Dream Each Night

Researchers have also indicated that everyone dreams, at least some of the time. Of course, I don’t know the answer, but I have heard people dream but don’t remember. Hopefully this is true. It would be better than the psychological dysfunction it would seem pertains to me in the previous paragraph. At the end of the blog I will include a web link which describes common images and their accepted meaning.

“There’s no single, definitive meaning for symbols and images in dreams,” Bergmann notes. “But just as a smile usually means that someone is happy, these dream images are so common, that they do have a generally accepted meaning.”

What in the World am I Dreaming?
Better Question, Why?

Dreams, Sleep, Happy, Nightime
Let the dream magic take you into another world.

Let’s get to the fun stuff. I can recall waking from my sleep many times and having a dream slip away from me. It felt like something blowing away in the wind. It was there, but fading just out of reach. With a blink it’s gone. At that point I can’t even grasp what I dreamt. It’s as if it were erased from my mind. For those dreams, it’s literally anyone’s guess. However, I do recall two of the times I woke up last night. Each as bizarre as the other.

Dream Number 1~ Let’s Hope no Symbolism Exists

The first dream I remember was going to the doctor. For those of you who don’t know, here is the back ground story. When I was a child I nearly died of pneumonia. As I type this I am getting over walking pneumonia and have been sick just over a month. Anyway, I dreamt I went back to the doctor and he told me that I had pneumonia again. He went on to say that I will likely always have it because there is so much damage to my lungs. WTF? That’s it. I’m assuming it was a short dream, but given any of the research above, it’s disturbing at best.

Dream Number 2~No Words

The second dream, well it’s weirder than the first. I dreamt I saw this guy I knew a long time ago. The face is clear as day. However, there is one little hiccup. This individual would NEVER have tattoos. Personally, I love guys with tattoos. I say that only because, in my dream this person was covered with tattoos. I’m talking neck, hands, the whole nine yards. While I remember talking with the person, I have no idea what it was about. I mean, if I’m going to dream about someone with tattoos can it be Adam Levine or LL Cool J? My point is only that the image in my dream didn’t fit the face. In fact if I weren’t sitting here typing this, this person wouldn’t even cross my mind.

I’m holding out hope dreams are random. The first dream I could probably explain away. After all I am paranoid I’m going to get pneumonia again. The second, who the hell knows.
